Summer is over - Back to it1 year ago
Our NEXT MEETING: Tuesday September 6th, 2016 at 7:30 pm at St Andrews Church Hall, 20955 Old Yale Road Langley BC Our speaker this month is Lori Weidenhammer, who recently published a book titled Victory Gardens for Bees a DIY Guide to Saving the Bees. This book investigates the growing problem of bee mortality and offers practical measures we can all take to help. Lori is a Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artist originally from Cactus Lake, SK. Her father kept bees when she was a child, and years later, she found herself pulled into the culture and science of bees and caring for beehives in her backyard. As an artist and educator Weidenhammer works with students of all ages on identifying native plants, eating locally, gardening for pollinators and guerrilla gardening. Monthly Business: We will be holding our annual election of officers for the coming year. Are you interested in helping out? With the way the club has grown in recent years we are always looking for volunteers to help out with club operations and activities.

Our Speaker this month is Julia Common. Julia is a Master Beekeeper and has been keeping bees since her university days. What started as a summer job became a life long passion which only in the past two years has been fully realized. Hives for Humanity was founded in response to the incredible reception her bees received in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver. Now with over 100 hives and 40 sites throughout Vancouver communities, Julia, as Chief Beekeeper for Hives for Humanity, has a story to share. She finds joy in teaching others the art and practice of beekeeping. Julia will be telling the story of Hives for Humanity -- from the first hive in 2012, to now with just over 100 hives in the mix and the 2015 season already begun! It's a story of community, connection, the culture that surrounds the beehive and, of course, beekeeping!
