The featured speakers include: Paul van Westendorp, Provincial Apiculturist, British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Dr. Elizabeth Elle, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, SFU, Native Bees in BC: Their Diversity and Contribution to Pollination. Dr. Stephen Pernal, Research Scientist, AAFC Beaverlodge Research Farm and Past-President of the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists. Jaquie Bunse, British Columbia Apiary Inspector, Fraser Valley/ Howe Sound, Agriculture Education and Services Heather Higo, B.Sc., M.Sc., worked with Dr. Mark Winston in the SFU Bee Research Lab for over 20 years Daniela Bates, Apiculture Information and Data Coordinator. Dr. Leonard Foster, Canada Research Chair in Proteomics and an Assistant Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UBC Cameron G. Lait, Research and Development Scientist, Contech Enterprises Inc., Delta, B.C., Honey Bee Brood Pheromone Research and Development. Dr. Dewey M. Caron, Emeritus Professor of Entomology & Wildlife Ecology, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716; Affiliate Faculty Horticulture Dept., Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, Summary of W.A.S. Conference and Colony Natural History, Yearly Cycle with Emphasis on “Crunch” Times. The Langley Bee Club will be hosting the day’s activities, including lunch. Admission is by donation: with half the proceeds going to the Boone Hodgson Wilkinson Bee Research Fund and half going to the Langley Bee Club to help defray the expenses of the day. Vanishing of the Bees documentary

The North Fraser Beekeepers are partnering with the CEED Centre and Cinema Politica to screen the Vanishing of the Bees documentary narrated by Ellen Page as part of our Earth Week activities. Attendance is by donation. The movie will be shown at the Maple Ridge Council Chambers at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30), 11995 Haney Place, Maple Ridge. We will have an informal discussion panel afterward. Cinema Politica shows documentaries and movies that are not usually handled by the mainstream commercial cinemas. Attendance is always by donation. The CEED Centre works in the areas of food security and community development. In case you are near Maple Ridge on Monday, April 18, I am also attaching our flyer for the Cheers to the Planet: Eat, Drink and be Eco tasting event. 6 wineries, 2 breweries, 4 cheeseworks, 5 restaurants + classical guitar = pleasant evening.
